Installation of BibleTime

This section explains how to install BibleTime on your system. Basically there are two ways to install it: Either by using prebuilt binary packages or by compiling from source code. Installing BibleTime using prebuilt packages is the easiest way.

Prebuilt binary packages

With the help of great volunteers, we try to provide packages for the most important Linux distributions. Before installing BibleTime, however, you need to find and install packages for CLucene >= 0.9.16a and Sword (Sword binaries are available at the BibleTime download site).

First download the binary package for your Linux distribution. For example: You want to download BibleTime 1.4 for SuSE Linux 9.0. In this case you have to download the package bibletime-1.4-1.suse9.0.i586.rpm. Please download the package "bibletime-i18n" package, too. This package contains the available translations of the BibleTime user interface and handbook.

If there are no packages for your version of Linux you have to install from source code. Please see below how to do that.

Installation from source code

Installation using BibleTime's source code is more difficult than using binary packages. Please follow the steps below if you decided to install BibleTime from sources:

  1. At first make sure the required software is installed on your system. Depending on your Linux distribution you have to install the development packages of the required software, too.

    • KDE 3.

      At least the libraries and the base package. KDE 3 is shipped with many Linux distributions. Very often it's installed by default.

    • CLucene >= 0.9.15.

      This is necessary for the new instant search feature.

    • Sword 1.5.9.

      Installation instructions are available on www.crosswire.org/sword/software. Basically the installation steps are

      ./usrinst.sh --enable-shared --without-clucene
      make
      make install
      make install_config

    Please note that this list is only valid for the latest version of BibleTime, older versions may require other software.

  2. Compile and install BibleTime:

    ./configure --prefix=<your KDE directory>
    make
    make install

    You can get your KDE directory by running the command kde-config --prefix. If you get problems please read our FAQ. If there's no solution of your problem, please contact us at .

    Debian (and possibly derived distros as well) use a non-standard path to store the documentation of KDE programs. Therefore the ./configure line above in this case needs to be changed to:

    kde_htmldir=/usr/share/doc/kde/HTML ./configure --prefix=/usr

    If you forget this, you'll likely not be able to access the handbook and the BibleStudy HowTo.

  3. Compile and install the translations of BibleTime's user interface (bibletime-i18n):

    ./configure --prefix=<your KDE directory>
    make
    make install

    Please see the warning regarding nonstandard paths in the previous paragraph.

Install works

You need Sword modules to work with BibleTime. Since version 1.4 BibleTime offers a userfriendly dialog (the Bookshelf Manager) to install/update/remove works. We strongly recommend this way to install works on your computer.

Instructions for manual installation is available on www.crosswire.org/sword/modules.

Available types of works

Here is a list of available types of works and where to get more information:

Did you know...

Did you know that today, 2008, more than 200,000,000 Christians are being disadvantaged, persecuted and even killed because of their faith? This map (German) shows the countries where people have to "pay" for their faith, and here is an English one that has some information about the main regions worldwide. These pages are from Open Doors, an independent organization trat tries to help persecuted Christians.
